NCCF Diaconate Jr. Deacons Program

Picture
The NCCF Diaconate drafted and implemented a formal program of instruction for Junior Deacons in 2025. The Junior Deacon Program is a leadership preparation ministry designed for youth ages 14–17. Under the guidance of Diaconate leaders, participants are mentored and trained to assist the Diaconate with Cathedral operational procedures, as they develop spiritually and practically as servant leaders by focusing on biblical foundations and practical ministry skills.

Junior Deacons are encouraged to take an active role in the life of their church. From assisting during worship services to participating in community outreach and service projects, the intent is to have the Junior Deacons be more than observers but contributors, servants and eventually leaders.

The program is completed in two phases. Phase one consists of academic classroom training and phase two consists of didactic training.

The goals of the Phase 1 academic training are:

  • Learn the origin of the role of a Deacon.
  • Learn the benefits of performing in the role of a Junior Deacon.
  • Learn ways to communicate with God through prayer.
  • Learn ways to study the bible daily with improved understanding of basic content.
  • Identify and develop teen servant leadership skills.
  • Learn the biblical principles of Baptism, Communion, Foot Washing, Altar Work.
  • Learn the basics of receiving and processing offerings.

Phase 2 is a key component of the Junior Deacon training that provides the opportunity of “firsthand” training in Diaconate areas of service, as assigned, until the completion of all training assignments. The “firsthand” training includes:

  • Adhere to 1st Sunday assigned seating arrangements.
  • Offering Collection Support, Baptism Support, and Van Ministry Support (x 1 week)
  • Logistics Support, Opening and Closing Support, Parking Lot Support (x 1 week)
  • Intake support when youth join the church (x 1, as the opportunity presents itself)
  • Food Pantry Support (x 2 weeks)
  • Haven for Hope (x 1 week)
  • Special Events support, i.e. KCICCM Conference (x1 week)
  • Community project (x1) A service project that can benefit the church or the outside community. Example: volunteer to serve at a food bank, organize a food drive to benefit the pantry, assist in one of the Diaconate service areas. and more.
The Junior Deacon’s involvement in ministry is intentional in order to instill a sense of responsibility and identity as they are being prepared for real service and leadership in the church and beyond
